"Busy Weekend"
The Black Hills Chapter had a very busy weekend. On Saturday we were up early to participate in the BHSU Swarm Day Parade. After the parade we took a ride through Spearfish Canyon. Then at 12:15 PM we met at the BHSU Football field and used the roar of the engines to welcome the players onto the field. Then several chapter members transported the BHSU dance team/cheer leaders to cheering posit...ions. Last night we participated in a fundraiser for Elissa Willuweit. The chapter ended up winning the 60" flat screen TV. We donated it back and they managed to auction it off for an additional $600.00. Today we were up early again for another fundraiser. We hosted a breakfast for the children of the late Jason Hoard. Jason was a US Marine who had completed two tours in Iraq/Afghanistan and was killed July 19th in a motorcycle accident. Cash is still being tallied. After breakfast we hosted a group ride over to Aladdin, WY, Hulett, WY, Devils Tower, Sundance, and Spearfish Canyon. While 34 riders enjoyed a day of riding, 22 golfers helped raise funds on the Elk Ridge Golf Course. Tomorrow it is back to work for some of us.

POW/MIA National Remembrance Day

On Friday, September 19, the Black Hills Chapter of the American Legion Riders conducted a POW/MIA ceremony of remembrance also known as the White Table ceremony for over 450 students and staff at Creekside Elementary. The flag line and the ceremony was dedicated to all POW/MIA. It was impressive to observe the large crowd of students paying respect and behaving in such way to make our community very proud of them.

The third Friday of September is the national day of remembrance for the American service men and women who are prisoner of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA.) There are still more than 83,000 American troops missing in action, according to the Department of Defense Prisoner of War-Missing Personnel Office. That includes some 73,681 from World War II; 7,947 from the Korean War; 126 during the Cold War; 1,657 from the Vietnam War; and six from Iraq and other conflicts. The American Legion Family is dedicated to ensuring that America’s POW/MIAs be honored and recognized, not just memorialized. Legion efforts focus on the need to account as fully as possible for those still missing, alive or dead.

Flag Program provided to Spearfish First Graders

The American Legion Family provided a flag program to nine (9) first grade classrooms at West Elementary of Spearfish. After rehearsing the program, seven (7) Legion Family members and six (6) Spearfish Veterans Honor Guard members, were ready to demonstrate the flag folding and unfolding ceremonies as well as the honor flag line. The Spearfish Auxiliary Unit prepared the Flag Etiquette and provided cards with 10 rules to show respect to the flag. The Black Hills Chapter of the American Legion Riders prepared 200 small flags donated by the American Legion Post 164, tying the rules of flag etiquette onto the flags with small ribbons.

On this sunny morning, the Legion Family did the program three times for three classrooms at-a-time, before meeting all nine classrooms outside by the school flag pole. The Spearfish Veteran Honor Guard raised the flag donated by the Women of War, honored by the Riders’ Flag Line and a group of students signed the Pledge of Allegiance. One Veterans’ mother once said: "The best way to honor those Americans who perished during the attack on our nation and our way of life on September 11, 2001 is to go where our nation sends us in the war against terror, and bring to justice those responsible."  It was requested that this flag which flew on the battlefield of Afghanistan be flown “in honor and support of those who have served and those who continue to serve.” Once the flag was hoisted, after the 190 first graders, hand on their hearts, said the Pledge of Allegiance, they each received a flag with the proper way to respect it.
